Glazed Old Fashioned Donut Cake: A Decadent Twist on a Classic Treat

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoon vanilla bean paste
  • 3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/4 cup whole milk

Instructions

1. 1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and thoroughly grease and flour your donut-shaped or bundt pan.

2. 2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

3. 3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla bean paste.

4. 4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and cardamom.

5. 5. Alternately add the dry ingredients and the buttermilk-sour cream mixture to the butter-sugar mixture, mixing just until combined after each addition.

6. 6. Pour the batter into your prepared pan and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

7. 7. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

8. 8. To make the glaze, whisk together the confectioners’ sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth and pourable.

9. 9. Once your cake has cooled, pour the glaze over the top, allowing it to drip down the sides.

Notes

Use room temperature ingredients for better incorporation.

Don’t overmix the batter to keep the cake tender.

Check for doneness with a toothpick.

Allow the cake to cool completely before glazing.
