Candied Orange Peel 6 Steps to Outstanding Deliciousness

Candied orange peel is a delightful and versatile treat that adds a burst of citrusy flavor to all sorts of desserts and snacks. Whether you enjoy it on its own as a sweet nibble or use it to garnish cakes, cookies, and more, this homemade candy is a true delight.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 fresh unwaxed oranges
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 star anise
  • 3 cloves
  • Powdered sugar or coconut sugar (for coating)
  • Dark or white chocolate (for dipping, optional)

Instructions

1. 1. Prepare the Oranges: Wash the oranges and peel them, removing as much of the white pith as possible. Cut the peel into thin strips, about 1/4-inch wide.

2. 2. Blanch the Peel: Place the orange peel strips in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then drain the water. Repeat this process two more times to help reduce the bitterness of the peel.

3. 3. Make the Syrup: In the same saucepan, combine the 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water. Add any optional ingredients, such as a pinch of salt, vanilla extract, or spices, if desired. Bring the mixture to a simmer.

4. 4. Candy the Peel: Add the blanched orange peel strips to the simmering syrup. Cook on low heat for 45-60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the peel becomes translucent.

5. 5. Dry the Peel: Remove the candied orange peel from the syrup and place it on a wire rack to cool and dry slightly.

6. 6. Optional Coating: Once the peel has cooled, you can roll it in powdered sugar or coconut sugar for a sweet and crunchy coating. Alternatively, you can dip the peel in melted dark or white chocolate for an extra indulgent treat.

7. 7. Store the Candied Peel: Keep the candied orange peel in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

Notes

To ensure your candied orange peel turns out perfectly every time, be sure to blanch it multiple times to reduce bitterness. The cooking time can vary depending on your preference for texture.
