Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

1. Preheat your oven to 450°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Peel the onion and cut about 1/2 inch off the top. Make vertical cuts around the onion, about 1/2 inch apart, stopping 1/2 inch from the root.

3. In a bowl, mix together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and egg.

4. Dip the onion in the milk-egg mixture, then dredge it in the flour mixture. Repeat for a thicker coating if desired.

5. Drizzle the olive oil over the coated onion. Place it on the baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

6. In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Stir well to combine.

7. Remove the Blooming Onion from the oven and let it cool slightly. Serve with the creamy dipping sauce.

Notes

For extra crispiness, consider double coating the onion.

Experiment with different spices in the coating for unique flavors.
